How to control the program
|
The software can be controlled by keyboard and/or mouse. The main menu has pulldown menus which are selected and activated
by using left/right arrow keyboard keys and pressing [Enter]. Also, use mouse to click/ double click a selected menu
item.
These are some common uses of keyboard keys accepted everywhere in the program:
[F1] - press any time to get help
[Enter] - select/activate an item
[Esc] - return back, exit or close window, cancel a change
[F5] - modify, start edit
[F10] - successfully complete, save and go on
[Del] - delete
[Ins] - expand a list
|
Prepare a message
|
You can edit and save the text of message in files (see the first two menu items). Use keyboard to type
the text :
keyboard keys to type the text
[Del] to delete a character over cursor
[Backspace] to delete a character to the left of cursor
[Enter] - start a new line
[Esc], [F10] - exit from editor
keyboard arrow keys to move the cursor
At exit, you will be asked to save the text in a file. Its file name will later be used when sending a telex.
|
Send a message
|
It is important to correctly specify message parameters:
select text file name from the list
most common network is telex
it is important to correctly specify telex country code, they are actually ocean region telex codes
for MES-to-MES (ship-to-ship) communication : specify 581 - AOR-E, 582 - POR,
583 - IOR, 584 - AOR-W
[Esc] - cancel sending
[F10] - send the message
When sending a message, it is necessary to correctly specify an address (calling number). Below are some samples:
For MES (Mobile earth Station, typically a ship) -to-land subscriber, telex call:
Country code+Local telex number+Answerback(optional), e.g.
56 (Country code) 71721 (Local telex number) 71721 umeb (Answerback, optional)
MES-to-MES telex call i.e. another ship: enter, e.g.
581 4 9 242 043 0
where
581 - Telex ocean region number instead of country code, 581 for AOR-E, 582 for POR,
583 for IOR, 584 for AOR-W
4 - Ordinary call in Inmarsat-C
9 - National Land Mobile Number
242 - Mobile Country Code (MCC)
043 - Station number
0 - Auxiliary service identification
MES-to-MES data transmission call (X.25):
581 (Data network identification code) 492420430 (As above for telex calls)
Stored destination addresses can be chosen by clicking any item on the "Address" line and then [Ins].
|
Edit destination directory
|
The list of destination addresses can edited by selecting "Edit destination directory" from the "Edit/Send" menu.
|
Receive messages
|
If a message arrives, the indicator "Message" of the electronic unit is lit and "MESSAGE" is displayed at the
lower left corner of the screen. Click "Receive messages" to transfer the message from the EU to the software for viewing.
|
Logfile
|
Logfile menu contains utilities to view, print out and delete a log of messages.
|
Utilities
|
"Utilities" set of items contains lots of tuning and configuration parameters.
Configuration - configuration menu described below
Ocean region information - not implemented
Tune to specified NCS - you can select an NCS and try to tune to it, in case the sattelite elevation for
the current ship position is acceptable, the operation succeeds
Initiate LogIn and LogOut - login/logout to/from a LES, in case of a successful login, a "Login succeeded" is
displayed at the lower left corner of the screen for some time
File/Disk utilities - are used to delete message files
Advanced utilities - some basic configuration parameters
Initiate PV test, Distress alert test and GetResults of last PV test - various tests are performed
|
Configuration
|
This is "Configuration" menu:
Set EU in normal MES mode - in MES mode, all messages, including EGC Safety are accepted
Set EU in EGC-only mode - only EGC safety messages are received by the EU
Distress setup - distress parameters, like nature of distress, coordinates etc. are specified (the same
as in "Distress" menu)
EGC SafetyNET, EGC FleetNET, EGC System - specify parameters which control receipt of EGC messages
Position - is used to manually specify actual ship position and set position update mode. If position update
mode is set to "Navigator" and the exercise has a GPS receiver allocated for this ship using
the Exercise manager "Equipment" menu, the ship position is updated automatically
UTC Date and Time - set date and time manually
Edit List of LES - a list of LES stations can be edited
Edit List of NCS - a list of NCS can be edited
Preferred ocean region - is selected
Initiate NCS channel scanning - a best NCS is selected, given your current ship position
|
Distress
|
This is distress setup and sending. The parameters include
Manual/Navigator position update - it is highly desirable to set "Navigator" in Configuration/Position before menu
and allocate a GPS receiver for this exercise
LES - distress calls are always set to the nearest RCC
Nature (of distress) - better to select it
Course and Speed - can be set manually
Undesignated distress can also sent by just pressing the SOS button on the EU.
After sending an alert, an acknowledgement is awaited (look at messages at the lower left corner of the screen).
