General notes on the use of controls. Using buttons : buttons have the main and secondary function activated by [F] press. Alphanumeric buttons are used like those of a mobile telephone to type characters. Button [ENT] is used to accept a selection. Button [CE] is used to cancel commands or return to previous menu level. Knobs are rotated by dragging mouse cursor around their centres. Distress button is covered by a flap, which opens automatically with a click on the button. |

| channel selection |
The transceiver has 160 programmable user channels and ITU channels. All channels are divided into
groups, user channels making up 8 groups of 20 channels in each plus groups for ITU channels. ITU
channel groups are for 4MHz (2 groups for duplex and simplex channels), 8MHz (2 groups), 6 MHz (2 groups)
and so on, for 8Mhz, 12Mhz, 16Mhz, for 18Mhz, 22MHz and 25 MHz. A channel can be selected in two ways : using the knobs and the keypad. The GRP knob is used to select a channel group, the CH knob - to select a channel within a group. The second way is channel selection by keyboard : type in channel number by alphanumeric keys and press ENT. The user-programmable channels has only digits (1..160), so just type in numeric keys; to select a simplex ITU channel, a string like 4-3 (4MHz group, channel 3) should be entered. To enter dash, hit button [0 DIM] 3 times, so hit [4] [0] [0] [0] [3] [ENT] in succession. The currently active radio channel is shown on the display in two ways : as a channel number or as frequency. To switch between these two modes, press [FREQ/CH]. |
|
| setting programmed channels |
channels from 1 to 160 are programmed. To program a channel, select its number by using GRP and CH knobs
or by typing its number on the keypad. The diplay shows empty frequency field if has not been set already.
Press [CLAR/RX]. Type RX frequency value using numeric keypad. Press AND HOLD(!) [ENT] button. Press [TXF/TX]
to set TX frequency. If the field is empty, type a frequency value using the keypad. If it is not,
use CH knob to select a digit position and then press a digit button to change the digit. When entering a frequency value, change emission type, if needed, using [MODE/SET] button. Do not forget to press and hold [ENT] to save the value. If just press [ENT], the frequency will be adjusted temporarily, but not saved! |
|
| tune the receiver | diplay shows blinking "TUNE" sign if the transceiver is not tuned. Press [TUNE]. | |
| transmitting |
stop all scans, set a channel and press the PTT (Push-To-Talk)
button on the microphone. Hold down the button while you speak.
To be heard from another ship equipped with another MF/HF radio,
the receiving radio must hold the receiving (RX) radio frequency equal to
transmitting (TX) frequency of the transmitting radio. Specifically,
it means that the communication is OK when the two parties
communicate on the same SIMPLEX (equal TX and RX frequencies) channel. Communications between ships are not possible on duplex channels, which have different RX and TX frequencies. Only ship-to-coast commincations are possible on duplex channels, as a coast radio swaps RX and TX channel frequencies. The transceiver should be tuned to be able to transmit (press [TUNE]). |
|
| tune the receiver | diplay shows blinking "TUNE" sign if the receiver is not tuned. Press [TUNE]. | |
| setting squelch level | [SQL] button is used to switch squelch function on and off to suppress interference noise. Press [F] and then [SQL]. Note that during a scan the noise may lock a channel, so squelch should be off when scanning | |
| channel scan | frequencies for scan are taken from a whole channel group. Select a group by GRP knob, switch squelch off (display should not show the SQL sign) by [F] and [SQL]. Press [F] and [SCAN] to start scanning frequencies of the selected group. To stop the scan, press [F] and [SCAN] again. Any rotation of [GRP] or [CH] knobs also stops the scan. Scan type is selected in initial set mode. | |
| programmed scan |
programmed scan scans frequency range from channel 159 to channel 160. Switch squelch off
(display should not show the SQL sign) by [F] and [SQL]. Press [F] and [SCAN] to start scanning.
To stop the scan, press [F] and [SCAN] again. Any rotation of [GRP] or [CH] knobs
also stops the scan. Scan type is selected in initial set mode. |
|
| scan type selection | scan type selection is NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, channel scan is the default mode. | |
| switch between radio and DSC watch mode | press [DSC]. | |
| send a routine individual DSC call |
DSC (Digital Selective Calling) functionality is used to initiate radio voice exchange between
stations.
MMSI numbers started from the leading non-zero digit belong to ship stations, with one leading zero - to groups of ships (group calls) and with two leading zeroes - to coast radio stations. If you selected an entry from the directory, the corresponding MMSI number is automatically selected as target MMSI |
|
| request other ship position |
|
|
| test DSC exchange |
This procedure sends a DSC call and waits for acknowledge to test DSC exchange.
|
|
| send a group call |

If you selected an entry from the directory, the corresponding MMSI number is automatically selected as target MMSI |
|
| send a geographical call |
geographical call can be of two types : safety and urgency. These calls are transmitted to
all ships within a specified geographical area on a DSC call distress frequency.
|
|
| receiving a call |
on receipt of a non-distress call, the display shows the call type,
sender MMSI (or its corresponding name from the directory),
and traffic frequencies suggested for communication. Press [FREQ] to cancel acknowledgment, or push [ENT] to acknowledge the call. If the call is acknowledged, the set automatically switches to the frequencies suggested for voice coommunication. Once you aknowledged the call, the sender receives your acknowledgment and automatically switches to the specified traffic frequencies as well. So, the only thing to do for you and the caller is to push PTT button and start radio communication. |
|
| receiving a position request |
on receipt of a position request from another ship, the display shows the call type and
sender MMSI (or its corresponding name from the directory). Press [ENT] to acknowledge the call (if you wish to send your ship position to the caller). |
|
| receive an group call | On receipt of the call, the display shows information related to sender and waits for acceptance of the call. Press [ENT] to accept, [FREQ] to cancel. If you accept the call, the radio switches to the frequency suggested for voice communication | |
| receive an geographical call | On receipt of the call, the display shows information related to sender and waits for acceptance of the call. Press [ENT] to accept, [FREQ] to cancel. If you accept the call, the radio switches to the frequency suggested for voice communication | |
| edit directory |
Directory is a list of destinations each made up of MMSI number
and a name. This
list is used to facilitate identification of destinations when sending and
receiving calls. All information displayed on screen will contain a name
(normally ship name) instead of an MMSI if this entry is found in the directory.
|
|
| edit group directory |
Directory is a list of destinations each made up of MMSI number
and a name. Group MMSI numbers start with zero.
|
|
| edit list of call frequencies |
This list are frequencies used for DSC calls. They are selected when making DSC calls.
|
|
| edit list of traffic frequencies |
This list are frequencies used for voice communications between stations. They are selected when making DSC calls.
|
|
| edit list of DSC scan frequencies |
These frequencies are RX frequencies for DSC calls. The tranceiver receives a DSC call if only
the call's call frequency is in this list.
|
|
| quickly send a distress alert |
This a simple procedure to send a distress alert without setting details.
|
|
| send a distress alert |
|
|
| receiving a distress acknowledgement | when a distress acknowledgement arrives from a coast station, the display shows Ack received and the set is ready for communication. Presss [ENT] to stop alarm sound. Press PTT to tal to the microphone. | |
| receiving a distress alert from another ship | when a distress alert arrives, the display shows "DISTRESS", caller's MMSI, nature of distress, caller's coordinates and time. Ships cannot send distress acknowledgments; this is a function of a coast radio station | |
| adjust backlighting |
display screen is backlighted
